Grand Island- Mayor Jay Vavricek has recommended Cory Schmidt to serve as the Grand Island Fire Chief.
Vavricek's recommendation will be taken to city council for action at the Sept. 25, city council meeting.
Mayor Vavricek stated, "I am confident that Cory's exceptional work ethic, integrity, and commitment to this fire department and community will ensure his success as the city of Grand Island's next fire chief."
Schmidt currently serves as a firefighter captain for the Grand Island Fire Department. Schmidt has an Associate's degree in fire protection technology from Southeast Community College in Lincoln, Neb., and a Bachelor's degree in business administration/management from Peru State College in Peru, Neb.
Schmidt was hired as a firefighter/EMT–B in 1996 and was later promoted to fire captain in 2000.
Schmidt is also a business owner in St. Paul, Neb., owning Hard Core 4x4 since 2008 and opening Schmidt Realty in 2011.
Prior to working for the Grand Island Fire Department, Schmidt served as a fire protection specialist for the United State Air Force for four years.
If Schmidt's appointment is approved by city council, Schmidt will assume the duties of fire chief on Monday, Oct. 1.
Schmidt will start at step one of the pay scale which is $72,063.42 annually.
