The Memorial Day weekend is off to a deadly start on local roads, as a 22-year-old Grand Island man was killed early Friday morning.

Police say a pickup was speeding and failed to negotiate a curve on Shady Bend Road, on the east side of town.

Police identified 22-year-old Daniel J. Martinez as the driver. They said he was already deceased, on arrival of emergency responders.

According to Police Capt. Dean Elliott, Martinez was the only one in the vehicle and he was ejected when the car went into a ditch.

The truck hit a concrete culvert and flipped on its top, catching fire.

The accident was reported at 5:17 Friday morning. The black 2000 Ford Ranger pickup was northbound, between Seedling Mile and Highway 30.
