Millions in Unclaimed Property Returned in 2013, Up 66 Percent from 2012
State Treasurer Don Stenberg announced Monday that more than $11 million in unclaimed property was returned in 2013.
The $11.26 million paid out to Nebraskans and former Nebraskans in 2013 is the highest amount returned since 2009, and is up more than 66 percent over 2012. The number of claims also increased from 2012, up from 12,159 to 18,273.
"These are significant increases both in the amount of unclaimed property returned to owners and the number of claims paid," Stenberg said. He says the increased amount claimed is a result of the hard work of his staff, outreach events and media efforts.
"We also have a staff member whose principal job function is to research large properties and reach out to owners who may have no knowledge of these resources," shared Stenberg. "This new service, implemented beginning last year, has proven very effective in reaching owners."
Stenberg says the Treasurer's Office still has more than $135 million in unclaimed property for more than 350,000 Nebraskans.
