The 2013 Defenders of Freedom Open House and Air Show at Offutt Air Force Base south of Omaha has been canceled because of federal budget cuts.

According to a statement released by the Air Force, the event, scheduled for Aug. 24-25, had to be canceled to minimize the impact of the sequestration and other budget uncertainties to military readiness.

"The Department of Defense and the Air Force arefacing difficult fiscal challenges, which requires us to make some toughdecisions here at Offutt," said Col. John Rauch, 55th Wing commander. "One ofthose tough decisions includes canceling this year's air show. We sincerelyenjoy opening our gates to the public and appreciate the tremendous support weget from Bellevue, Omaha and the surrounding communities, but with the currentguidance and fiscal restraints we can't host an air show."

The show has been held annually since 1972.

No dates for future Defenders of Freedom shows have been set.
