New Gering Police Chief Expected to be Internal Hire

GERING, Neb. (AP) -- The mayor of Gering says he expects the city to hire internally when selecting its new police chief, but there's no timeline on when that might happen.

Gering Mayor Ed Mayo says the city is not pressed by any timeline to start the process of offering the job initially to internal candidates. He says an internal hire will offer continuity to the department.

Longtime Police Chief Mel Griggs announced his retirement at the end of February. Two captains in the department, Jason Rogers and George Holthus, are sharing chief duties until the position is filled.

Mayo says he believes there are several qualified candidates.
