Officials Say Overpayments for Disability Recipients Due to Budget, Backlog Issues
The Social Security Administration is overpaying big sums ofmoney to disability beneficiaries, and lawyers, consumer advocates and watchdog organizations say theagency's own missteps are to blame.
Some disability recipients have continued to get payments formonths or even years after notifying the agency they're working again orearn too much to qualify.
Officials say budget constraints and large backlogs ofapplications have delayed the reviews of income information.
And as a result, the administration reportedly made $1.3 billion inoverpayments in just two years.
