One Dead in Downtown Grand Island Shooting

One person is dead, following a shooting in downtown Grand Island Wednesday evening.

Witnesses told NTV they heard two loud noises that sounded like gunfire around 6:30 p.m. near the Downtown Center office building, at Third and Locust.

G.I. Police Captain Kerry Mehlin said a man was shot in the torso near a parked SUV at 308 North Locust Street. An ambulance transported that person to St. Francis Medical Center, but he died at the hospital.

Police have not released the identity of the victim.

Police surrounded the intersection, in the heart of downtown, near the post office for nearly four hours. Yellow police tape blocked the area off, as investigators collected evidence at the scene.
Deborah Dombrowski was also there. She said she cleans the Downtown Center and knows the victim.
"I just happened to come around the corner and saw the police cars and the ambulances and I thought someone got hurt out there. I looked out and it was [his] car," said Dombrowski.
Authorities towed the SUV around 10:15 p.m.

NTV is not releasing the name of the victim until it is confirmed by police.

It's not known if anyone was taken into custody, or the possible motive for the shooting. Police would not release any information on a possible suspect Wednesday night.

Authorities towed the SUV around 10:15 p.m.

More information is expected Thursday morning.
