Ordinance Would Allow GIPD to Tow Vehicles with Unpaid Parking Tickets

Your vehicle could soon be towed if you don't pay your parking tickets in Grand Island.

The proposed ordinance passed a first reading at Tuesday's city council meeting.

If adopted, the measure would update the parking code and impound release procedures.

It would also add a scoff law provision that allows police to tow your vehicle if you have five unpaid parking tickets.

"Right now the city doesn't have any system if people fail to pay parking tickets. Most people are honest and do, however some people just choose to park illegally and if they get a ticket they ignore it," said Grand Island Police Chief Steve Lamken.

Lamken said it's part of his department's efforts to up enforcement.
