Health officials say there has been more than 130 cases of whooping cough diagnosed this year in Nebraska.

Whooping cough, or pertussis, is spread when infected people cough or sneeze. It starts like the common cold but can turn into violent coughing spells. The disease is especially serious for infants.

The Center for Disease Control recommends everyone to stay up to date on the Tdap vaccine. In addition to whooping cough, Tdap vaccine combines protection against tetanus and diphtheria.
