Overton Feedlot Hit With Fines

A feedlot near Overton has been ordered to pay thousands of dollars after pleading guilty to charges of violating the Clean Water Act.

Central Feeders Incorporated has been sentenced to serve three years probation and pay a $20,000 fine. During probation, Central Feeders, Inc. must follow a compliance plan that will be monitored by the U.S. Probation Office and the Environmental Protection Agency.

According to the U.S. Attorney's office, the cattle feeding operation – on at least four separate occasions between April of 2011 and April of 2012 – had livestock waste discharged into Mud Creek, a tributary of the Platte River. It did not result in any fish dying and according to the U.S. Attorney's office, no environmental clean-up costs were noted.

In addition to the criminal penalty, Central Feeders has negotiated a civil penalty with the EPA, which is anticipated to cost nearly $39,000.
