About 35 people gathered at the public library Monday night to discuss the issue.
The Hastings City Council voted to close Ninth Street between Elm and Ash avenues last month to make way for a pedestrian walk in the heart of the Hastings College campus.
However, some residents in the surrounding area oppose the idea citing possible traffic problems.
Petition organizers hope to get 3,000 signatures to force a special election.
The closure isn’t set to happen until June 1, 2015.
