Police: Melling Killed Daughter with Shotgun
The recovery of two dead bodies in a Burwell home are being investigated as a murder-suicide by officials, according to Garfield County Attorney Dale Crandall. Police believe Christopher Melling, 31, killed his daughter Aimee, 2, with a shotgun before turning the weapon on himself.
Police arrived at the Melling residence late Tuesday after neighbors reported a lack of activity, and have concluded that the two likely died between Saturday night and Tuesday morning.
Just days before the bodies were recovered, Tammy Melling -- wife of Christopher and mother of Aimee -- was arrested by Burwell Police on domestic assault charges. Reports state that Christopher claimed his wife threatened and struck him during an argument. No formal charges have been filed.
Investigators do not consider Tammy Melling a suspect in the deaths of her husband and daughter.
Aimee Melling would have turned 3 years old on Sunday, Jan. 12.
