The McCook Police Department are warning residents of a cell phone scam that has hit the area.

Authorities say several people reported receiving automated calls on their cell phones claiming their debit card had been deactivated and to "press one for an operator."

According to officials, that person is then connected to a scammer who attempts to get the victim's debit card number and proceeds to drain the account of funds.

Authorities are issuing a reminder that banks to not conduct business such as that over the phone. They say it is important to never give debit card, credit card or other personal information to anyone you don't know over the phone.
