A Hastings program teaching independent living skills celebrates one year with games and a barbecue.

Hastings' Maryland Living Center hosted the event to say 'Thank You' to the community and surrounding areas for welcoming the program this past year.

Officials say this event will help spread awareness of foster care.

"Nebraska as a state actually has the highest foster care population per capital in the United States," said program director Ben Dumas. "So that just sets us up as a state to really experience youth homelessness."

They provide independent living services to 12 kids, which is the program's capacity.

Organizers hope to make this an annual event.
