Projections for pay raises next year point to slightly more generous paychecks than what workers have seen over the past few years.

Mercer, a consulting firm, took these findings from a new survey, reporting that employers anticipate that they will increase worker salaries by an average of 2.9-percent in 2014.

      That's a rise from 2.8-percent in 2013.

Mercer says part of the downward pressure on salaries comes from relatively high unemployment.

That means employers still have the upper hand in recruiting new workers.
