Thousands of plastic ducks took to the waters at Grand Island's Island Oasis on Saturday, but only one was worth $5,000.

People pay $5 for a numbered duck, then they're tossed in the Lazy River at the waterpark to race. It's the largest fundraiser for Leadership Tomorrow, a skill development program that works with promising Hall County men, women and youth.

“They have the skills and we can help build on that, and then we can also encourage more leaders to step up,” says Leadership Tomorrow Executive Director Brenda Branstiter. “We need young leaders, we need leaders to continually develop and help our community.”

Leadership Tomorrow alumni sold a record amount of ducks this year: 6,838 to be exact.

It's the 12th year for the Roy's Grand/Leadership Tomorrow Duck Derby, but the program has been around for nearly 30.

“Today we've graduated over 800 graduates in the adult program and over 500 in the youth program,” says Branstiter. “The adults go through a nine month session, and we have a class, Class 29, that is actually starting September 11th.”

The first 19 ducks to finish earn their adopter's prizes, with the top being $5,000 cash.

Branstiter says they use the Duck Derby dollars to keep tuition costs down.
