The city of Red Cloud has received a $300,000 grant from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development to promote tourism in the area.

The Community Development Block Grant will be used to renovate the three-story "Moon Block" building to house the National Willa Cather Center.

The city will turn the funds over to the Willa Cather Foundation, the owner of the Moon Block building, which is attached to the Red Cloud Opera House, giving officials hopes of attracting entertainment options.

The first-phase of the renovation includes turning the three floors into the Foundation Center -- a gallery, performance, and exhibit area thatdirectly connects with the Opera House. There will also be an elevator installed alongwith handicap-accessible restrooms and building entryways.

The project will be completed with an additional $1.8 million from Willa Cather Foundation sponsors and donors.

The Willa Cather Foundation is a non-profit association that oversees the largest number of buildings and sites on the National register of Historic Places devoted to an author in the United States.
