Red Cross and UNK Team Up for Blood Drive

A single donation of blood can help save up to three lives, which is why the American Red Cross is hoping to spread the importance of donating to more young people.

The Red Cross and UNK have teamed up for the "We Challenge U" blood drive.

College and high school blood drives make up 20 percent of donations given through the Red Cross, making the event at UNK an important one.

UNK's HOP program and Health and Science Club are hosting the two day event.

The drive kicked off Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the UNK Student Union.

Pre-registration on Wednesday was higher than normal, making the outlook for the event very positive.

"We're seeing over 90 percent of our slots that are available for donations already filled, which is more than usual. It's normally about 80 percent. So we're expecting quite a few donations," said organizer Derek Marshall, of UNK's HOP program.

The blood drive starts back up again Thursday at 11 a.m. in the same location and will run until 5 p.m.

It's preferred for donors to register online at, however officials say walk-ins are always welcome.
