Safety Plans for New Vets Home

The current veterans home in Grand Island has narrow hallways -- some below requirements, and the administration reports ramps from the second and third floor are too steep, but they are making plans to ensure these aren't issues at the veterans home planned for Kearney.

“Wider hallways, we’re going to have private bathrooms, all private rooms. It will be a much greater opportunity for our members to enjoy and receive quality care,” said administrator Alex Willford.

The plans suggest all the rooms will be on one floor. At the current facility, people have to walk 1,000 feet at times to reach their destination. The new plans aim to make is so residents can reach any place in 600 feet.

These plans are still in draft mode, with nothing set in stone. The Central Nebraska Veterans Home should know by October if grant money will be available for the new build.
