Salvation Army Helps People Dealing with Cold Weather
The cold weather continued Thursday with wind chills reaching well below zero. Those frigid conditions have many more people going to the Salvation Army for help.
The organization has had an increase in people asking for heating and utility assistance. And the Salvation Army in Kearney says they have plenty of coats, gloves and hats to give out in the cold weather.
"If someone can't afford a coat, just giving them that extra lift up or hand out is something we always like to do here. Helping someone pay their utility bills for that month gives extra money on something to pay another bill they might be behind on," said Cassandra Burkett.
Customer electricity bills have gone up with the Nebraska Public Power District. NPPD recommends changing the furnace filter, switching to LED lights and making sure windows in the house are sealed to shrink the electricity bill.
