Sen. Janssen Expected to Announce Run for Governor

Sen. Charlie Janssen

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- A Nebraska lawmaker who is leaning toward a run for governor is scheduled to make an announcement in his hometown of Fremont.

Sen. Charlie Janssen says he will speak at noon Monday at Midland University. He previously has said that he is seriously interested in running for governor, and that he expects to announce his decision by the end of February.

Janssen, a Republican, is known for his strong opposition to illegal immigration. He also has introduced guns-rights bills this year and is trying to end state-funded prenatal care coverage for illegal immigrants.

Former Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy had declared that he would run in 2014, but has been returning donor checks following his resignation earlier this month.
