Senator Plans to Propose Reading Test To Enter Fourth Grade

An Omaha statesenator is preparing legislation that would bar students from entering fourthgrade if they fail reading proficiency tests in the third grade.

Senator Scott Lautenbaughsaid that if students don't have a strong foundation in reading they won't beable to succeed in other areas.

This is just one ofseveral education proposals the senator plans to introduce in the 2014legislative session.

Some educators thinkthe idea of holding back a third-grader only because he or she didn't pass areading test is misguided and too simplistic.
