Rep. Adrian Smith has won the Republican primary election, giving him a chance to keep his seat representing Nebraska's Third District in the House.

With nearly 82 percent of precincts reporting, Smith had just over 68 percent of the vote, well ahead of the only other Republican candidate, Tom Brewer.

"I am grateful Third District Republicans have again placed their confidence in me to continue fighting for limited government, fiscal responsibility, and Nebraska common sense in the House of Representatives," said Smith late Tuesday night.

"We ran this campaign the Nebraska way, and I appreciate the voters responding to our positive message on the issues," Smith added. "Thank you to my campaign team, my family and friends for their unwavering support, our many volunteers, and of course, everyone voting to make this victory possible."

Smith will face off with Democratic candidate Mark Sullivan in November.
