State to Pay for Poor Care at Beatrice Center
A judge has ordered the state to pay a Lincoln woman whose son nearly died in 2008 because of poor treatment he received at the state-run Beatrice State Development Center.
Gage County District Judge Paul Korslund Wednesday ordered the state to pay $150,000 to Sandra Ham.
Ham filed a lawsuit claiming that the doctor at the center was negligent for failing to examine her son, Ian Ham, after he had a feeding tube improperly reinserted.
However, Korslund rejected the argument that he was cared for improperly before the incident.
Ian Ham was among nearly 50 people considered medically fragile moved out of the center in 2009 following the death of an 18-year-old who received what state officials have acknowledged was inadequate care.
