Two Bodies Found Inside Burwell Home

Law enforcement officers are investigating the deaths of a man and his nearly 3-year-old daughter, after their bodies were found inside a Burwell home.

The bodies were discovered Tuesday afternoon after neighbors called to report a lack of activity at the home.

Authorities identified the bodies as 31-year-old Christopher Melling, of Burwell, and Aimee Melling, who was nearly 3 years old.

"It appears there may have been a homicide suicide combination, but that determination can't be made until we've completed the investigation," said Garfield County Attorney Dale Crandall.

Officials say a shotgun was found at the scene, but haven't yet confirmed whether it was used in the deaths.

      Autopsies have been ordered.

The Nebraska State Patrol is leading the investigation, and is currently considering the incident as a murder-suicide. The Burwell Police Department and Garfield County Sheriff's Office are assisting.

Crandall says he never expected an incident like this to happen.

"We have very little violent crime. I've been county attorney since 1979 and this is the first homicide we've had in Garfield county," said Crandall.

Melling leaves behind a wife and another child.

NTV News has learned Christopher Melling's wifeTammy was arrested January 3rd on charges of domestic assault andmenacing threats. The arrest was just five days before the bodies of Christopherand Aimee were found.

Tammy Melling was arrested in Burwell and booked into ValleyCounty because Garfield County does not have a jail. Her court date isscheduled for February 4th.
