      USDA Helps Bring Local Produce into Cafeterias

      The USDA is taking steps to get localproduce into school lunches.

      The organization approved grants to 71organizations in 42 states in order to help get locally grown farm productsinto school cafeterias.

      In Lyons, Neb. the Center for Rural Affairshas been approved for $99,600. The organization plans to help 10 pilot schoolsset up farm-to-school programs and hold farm summits with the money.

      In Decorah, Iowa the Food & Fitnessinitiative will get a similar sum to expand their existing program to moreschools. They have a goal of increasing their local food purchase by 200percent.

      These projects across the U.S. willserve more than 13,000 schools and bring locally grown food to 2.8 millionstudents.
