While central Nebraska was getting hammered with heavy winds and nickel-sized hail, the western part of the state got hit hard with a spring snowstorm.

The storm was fierce enough to close stretches of Interstate 80 west of Sidney as well as sections of U.S. Highway 385. The Nebraska Department of Roads website shows the roads have been closed since late last night and early this morning.

The National Weather Service says the storm will dump up to a foot of snow in the Panhandle through Tuesday as it stretches into central Nebraska where many residents have already seen ice taking over roadways.

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories for large portions of central and western Nebraska.
