Young Man Gets Jail Time, Probation for Vandalism at Historic Cemetery
A 19-year-old Saronville man has been sentenced to jail time and probation for vandalizing dozens of gravestones at the historic Farmers Valley Cemetery in Hamilton County.
Robert Kelly Jr. was ordered Friday to serve 180 days in jail, five years probation, perform 200 hours of community service and pay $10,000 in restitution.
Officials say nearly 50 gravestones at the historic cemetery were destroyed and toppled in August. Some were damaged beyond repair.
The cemetery was established in 1876 along the banks of the Big Blue River south-southwest of Henderson. It is the final resting place for many Hamilton County pioneers, including Civil War veterans and former Nebraska State Senator Perry Reed.
