Young People Leaving the Farm? Think Again
Think all the young people are leaving the farm? Some say that's a myth and point to a new crop of young farm leaders.
These are exciting times in agriculture, but also challenging, especially for those getting their start.
Nebraska Farm Bureau's Young Farmer and Rancher conference is a chance to talk about the issues this generation faces.
That includes the high cost of land, cattle, and equipment.
Shelly Thompson said, "We started our own operation, and that's tough. It's tough to find land, and be able to afford it, it's a whole different aspect."
These young farmers say it's easy to say they'll wait until they're older and more established to join a group like Farm Bureau, but say the networking is a great asset.
Since the average age of the farmer has gone up, this is an opportunity to train young leaders to be advocates for agriculture.
