Outdoor Files: Easter weekend activities
Good morning. This Saturday and Sunday is Easter weekend. If you have a bit of cabin fever and restlessness to burn, maybe head to Ponca or Nebraska City.
In Nebraska City, Saturday 9-5 and Sunday 9-4, Arbor Lodge State Historical Park, Arbor Day Farm, the Apple House Market and the Lied Lodge all have a variety of Easter related activities. Everything from brunches to jams and jellies, from real bunnies, lambs and chicks to eggs hunts. Look over the schedule at arbordayfarm.org
At Ponca State Park, Saturday fun includes egg painting at 10:30 AM,an egg hunt at 1:30 and woodland hike at 3:30. Consider a cabin stay. Lodging reservations in all our parks with cabins can be made by calling 402-471-1414.
And a bit further out on the calendar, Mahoney State Park will hold it’s annual Platte River Art Show Saturday and Sunday April 7th and 8th. Artists from four states will display, sell works in a variety of mediums. The show is free though you’ll need a daily or annual park entry permit.
Let’s visit Johnson Lake south of Lexington. The inlet area has seen some angler friendly upgrades over the years and more are underway in the memory of late Game and Parks Commissioner Lynn Berggren. Additional lighting, benches, fishing pad, disability compliant features including paved sidewalk will be completed for use this May.
Last reminder of some public information meetings on mountain lions and our latest research. All to be held at 7 PM…April 3rd at the Chadron State College Student Center Ballroom, April 4th Gering Civic Center and April 11th at the fairgrounds in Valentine
Easter is a significant religious holiday. Some animals like lambs and bunnies have been associated with the day as well. Just for fun, I’m sharing a few video clips of those long eared plant munchers. Over the years, I think my favorite rabbit scene was of this little guy, on a 10 degree windy morning. I think he is the very definition of cute as he burrows deeper into the snow in search of more comfort and warmth.
