Outdoor Files: Outdoor activities coming up this summer
Have you ever wanted to try your hand at fishing, archery, shooting, kayaking and other activities but don’t know where to turn? I have a solution for you this Saturday May 12th.
The annual Fort Kearny Outdoor Expo will be held from 9-4 at the Fort Kearny State Recreation Area. Expert volunteers in a variety of pursuits will assist you in trying your hand at events you may wish to take up for a lifetime. We can accommodate all ages and experience levels. In addition to classic activities, there will be slingshots, throwing spears, climbing wall, ropes course to name a few. There are always presentations, this year fish filleting and you can take home your own catch, lumberjills, a cowboy fast draw show, blacksmithing, dog training seminar, dutch oven fare, live snakes, kid’s turkey gobbling contest, six thousand gallon aquarium, tools and skills of the pioneers, free hot dogs while they last…go online to review it all at FortKearnyExpo.com The event is free though you will need a park entry permit to enter the park.
A number of other events are planned this Mother’s Day weekend in the parks. Mahoney State Park, is hosting the Sip Nebraska wine, beer and spirits festival this Friday and Saturday. For tickets and more information go to SipNebraska.com
To view the outdoor calendar for this weekend and further out dates go to the Game and Parks website OutdoorNebraska.org
While there, click on the tab Buy A Permit. That’s an easy way to get your park entry or fishing permit for this year but I also mention it as the link to go through for a Nebraskaland Magazine Special. Through the month of May only, a one year subscription is being offered at only $12 bucks.
And this reminder, Saturday May 19th will be free park entry-free fishing day around the state. More on that in my report next week.
Until then, I’m Ralph Wall reminding you time outdoors is time well spent.
