Two Rivers: American Heart Month

Heart Health (MGN)

February is American Heart Month, Founded by Lyndon B Johnson in 1964

- It was part of Proclamation 3566 on December 30, 1963, here is a snippet, “Whereas these programs of research and education have resulted largely from the teamwork between the American Heart Association, its chapters and affiliates, and the Federal Government, particularly the Public Health Service through the National Heart Institute and the Heart Disease Control Program; and

Whereas the results thus far achieved in combating the cardiovascular diseases give hope that the continuation and expansion of these programs may eventually eliminate these diseases as important causes of death;”

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Luckily there are easy lifestyle changes that can be made to prevent heart disease.

There are many easy ways to help make your heart stronger they are:

-Move for 2 1/2 hours each week

-Doesn’t have to be in specific time amounts (10 minutes here, 30 there)

-Take the stairs instead of the elevator

-Park your car farther from the store

-Walk your dog, go to the park

-Stop smoking

-Choose healthy foods

-Find relaxing activities to manage stress

TRPHD is currently working in a healthy lifestyle grant that encourages adults to start walking and choose a healthier diet. Parts of this grant that we are working in right now are:

-Walkability in Lexington, specifically helping to campaign for a walking trail to the Lexington Fieldhouse

-Choose healthy here program being used in several local venues, look for signs!
