Sunday Salute: Donald K. Schwab


This week we honor a World War II veteran and recent Medalof Honor recipient, First Lieutenant Donald K. Schwab.

Donald began his career in the U.S. Army in 1941, andcompleted his service in 1945. During his years in the Army he was a part ofthe 3rd Infantry Division and was stationed in Africa, France andItaly.

A highly decorated veteran, Donald has a long list of awardsand honors. He has received: the Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters; theDistinguished Service Cross; the Bronze Star; the World War II Victory Medal;American Defense Medal Good Conduct Medal; Combat Infantry Badge with wreath;and five Battle Stars.

The Distinguished Service Cross, the second highest awardgiven for military action, was awarded to him for heroism and courage insingle-handedly destroying a German machine gun nest near Lure, France.

Most recently, 70 years after his time in the military,Donald was awarded the highest award, the Medal of Honor. His daughter Marysaid it was "quite a celebration for our family last week as we, with the President,were able to honor our father after all these years" and wanted to honor herfather on behalf of all his children and their families.
