This week we honor a WWII veteran who recently celebrated his 94thbirthday, Elmer Hinrichs. Elmer was drafted into the Army in 1942 and completedbasic training in San Diego California. He was trained in artillery andanti-aircraft gunnery.
Elmer was transferred to Pearl Harbor and joined an anti-aircraftcrew, operating a gun that was salvaged from a sunken ship in the harbor. His lastgun had a range of 30 miles and required machinery just to move it. In one ofits first tests they broke out windows all the way across the bay.
After the war Elmer returned to the states for the first timesince his deployment to his home in Hildreth. He farmed there for the rest ofhis working life.
Elmer now calls Grand Island his home, and lives in the VeteransHome. His family celebrated his birthday with him last week. They said they areproud of not only Elmer's service but also the service of all the men and womenwho served our country alongside him in WWII.
Elmer, Thank you for your service to our country and happy94th birthday.
