Sunday Salute: Gale W. Probasco


World War II veteran Gail W. Probasco is being honored as this week's Sunday Salute.

Gail was drafted into the Army in December 1944. He traveled to Camp Gordon in Georgia for training.

It was here that Gail married Elsie in 1944. The couple celebrated their 70th anniversary this year.

Gail then went on to serve in the 219th combat engineers.

He fought in several European countries including England, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Austria.

His company helped liberate Jewish prisoners from a German POW camp and built the longest bridge across the Blue Danube River during the war.

Gail was honorably discharged in May 1946.

Then he returned to the Indianola area to farm and rejoin his family.

Gail's family nominated him in honor of his 90th birthday, which he celebrated on Saturday.
