Two Rivers: Life Smiles School Dental Program
*Community Health Assessment
o Issuing a survey to understand the health needs of the TRPHD jurisdiction
o You can find the survey on our website or Facebook page
o We will use the results to help us define programmatic activities for the next few years
o Your participation would be greatly appreciated!
*Excited to discuss our Life Smiles School Dental Program!
o Program originated in 2008
o Awarded national “Model Practice” by NACCHO -National Association of City and County Officers
o Offering dental prevention services in approximately 18 schools (in the Two Rivers Public Health Department service area) with goals of expansion
o Services offered are screenings, fluoride treatments, sealants, oral health education, free homecare supplies, and referral assistance (if needed)
o We encourage regular visits to their dentist and dental hygienist
*National and State Research says….
o Poor oral health can lead to decreased school performance
o Poor social relationships,
o Less success later in life
o Children experiencing oral pain are distracted and unable to concentrate on schoolwork.
o An estimated 51 million school hours per year are lost because of dental visits and oral health problems.
o When children’s acute oral health problems are treated and they are not experiencing pain, their learning and school-attendance records improve, making in-school programs important in contributing to better learning experiences
If you are interested in having a program offered in your child’s school, contact your school nurse or call Two Rivers Public Health Department at 888-669-7154
