40 firefighters battle grass fire near Kearney
KEARNEY, Neb. —
Dozens of firefighters spent several hours battling a grass fire that sparked near Kearney on Wednesday.
According to the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department, grass caught fire at around 11:33 a.m. at 145th Road and Poole Avenue northeast of Kearney.
31 Kearney firefighters and nine Gibbon firefighters worked for several hours, getting the fire under control at around 2:08 p.m. Firefighters remained in the area, putting out hot spots until around 3:30 p.m.
Officials said approximately 100 acres of land was burned, and they said the fire was sparked by a mechanical failure of a truck that was driving north on Poole Avenue.
