Audit: Corrections not enforcing billing protocols
The Nebraska State Auditor's Office said a dentist billed Nebraska prisons more than $145,000 for dentures for inmates not eligible for services.
In a letter to Department of Correctional Services Scott Frakes, Audior Charlie Janssen said 111 out of 122 inmate claims submitted by Doctor David Schrad for denture-related services were not allowed under protocol.
It said 108 inmates received the services prior to being incarcerated for 24 months, totaling $140,720.28.
The audit said three inmates recieved the services within six months of the inmates’ release date, totally $4,780.30.
The audit recommends the department better enforce those protocols.
It also recommends it review Doctor Schrad's charges to see if any amount paid should be paid back.
