University says Eichorst owed $1.7 million
Fans of the Big Red are talking green – what’s the cost to fire the athletic director?
The University says Shawn Eichorst is owned $1.7 million. The former athletic director's contract runs through June 2019.
That comes on top of the money owed to former coach Bo Pelini. The Omaha World-Herald has reported Pelini receives $128,000 a month, and will do so for another year and a half, for a total of about $6.5 million.
It's important to note, Nebraska's athletic department is one of the few in the country that is self-funded.
Because of ticket sales, private donors, and corporate sponsors, they don't require tax dollars.
Just last month, the University Board of Regents approved an 11-year deal with Adidas, for a total of $64 million in cash.
The decision to end the Eichorst era was announced by Chancellor Ronnie Green.
Green is married to a Clay County native, and affectionately calls her “Husker Jane.” The formerly lived in Sutton, in south central Nebraska.
Two days before the Eichorst announcement, Green gave a speech about “unprecedented momentum” on the academic side, but clearly did not see that momentum on the football field.
