New basketball camp honors former coach, benefits family fighting cancer
A new area basketball camp helps share the legacy of a beloved coach while helping a family friend whose daughter is struggling with cancer.
The family of former Ravenna boys' basketball coach Paul Beranek is passing along their knowledge of the sport, in the first annual Paul Beranek Basketball Camp. The new fundraiser will help support one of Coach Beranek's former assistant coach's daughter Emma Gehring.
Paul Beranek's son, Drake, said they're happy to do something that honors their dad.
"He'd be proud of us I think," said camp co-creator Drake Beranek. "You know, he's definitely there in spirit. We learned a ton from him and every day it seems like we're trying to give back something he taught us or what we learned from him."
The basketball camp will be held Saturday Dec. 23 in Ravenna from 8 a.m. to noon.
Proceeds will go to the Gehring family.
