Road crews on standby by for winter weather
KEARNEY, Neb. (NTV NEWS) —
The moment snow begins to fall, the Nebraska Department of Transportation says it will deploy crews.
Wednesday evening, departments across the state had crews working overnight and supervisors prepared to monitor rural and metro areas.
The big concern with the incoming weather system is high winds blowing snow onto roadways. The department of transportation says if that happens the best thing crews can do is wait.
"If it doesn't turn icy before the snow starts to blow, we will let it blow across the road. If we do any treatment to the road while it's blowing that will cause the roads to turn slick," said Gary Hibberd, Buffalo County maintenance crew chief.
The department says as long as there are no accidents in the area, crews will wait for winds to die down, before applying treatment to the roads.
