Shelter dogs from Texas come to Kearney to find new homes – after those shelters were evacuated due to hurricane Harvey.

Carole Sue Cottrell collects her new dog 'Sophie' during a K-9 Freekz fundraiser at Chug-A-Lug in Kearney Friday night. The organization takes rescues and provides fostering support until dogs can be adopted out.

Sophie was one of five brought to Kearney from a shelter in Corpus Christie during an aid transport for hurricane victims, and K-9 Freekz organizers say moments like that make it all worth while.

"I think they do wonderful work in rescuing all these dogs and trying to find a permanent home for them and I’m glad and excited to be part of that," said Texas dog adopter Carole Sue Cottrell.

"You know what the most important thing was to me, the look on Carole Ann's face when she got her dog, the adoption we just did here," said K9 Freekz Rescue's Heather Bennett and Joni Miller. "We asked her to come down here, she waited for over an hour just cause she was so excited and the look on her face, you caught that on camera and look at the dog she's so thankful, that's the moments we live for."

Friday night's fundraiser included a dart tournament, food and a silent auction. All proceeds will help with costs associated with fostering.

About five more dogs will be arriving to K-9 Freekz Rescue from hurricane Harvey in the next couple weeks, and organizers are hoping to help with rescue efforts from hurricane Irma as well. More information can be found on the group's Facebook page.
