Transformer sparks grass fire near hike-bike trail
KEARNEY, Neb. —
Kearney fire crews respond to a grass fire north of the Buckle on the west side of town.
Kearney Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Jim Tacha said that someone in the area heard a popping sound and noticed a fire at the base of an electrical pole.
Officials said while the spark came from the transformer, extreme caution was still used.
"Yeah even though on today's fire there's no power line down," said K.V.F.D, Fire Chief Jim Tacha, "we did still use extreme caution when approaching that area because we knew that it was probably electrical in nature for the cause."
Some area residents and the Buckle itself was out of power for a short period afterwards.
