More than 250 people gathered on Sunday to support research to find a cure for type 1 diabetes.

People joined the University of Nebraska at Kearney chapter of the College Diabetes Network for a walk at Yanney Heritage Park in Kearney.

Organizers said when they we're diagnosed there was a lot of fear about what it would mean for their lives, and they didn't have many people to talk to about it.

They hope events like this will help create bonds in the community.

"We get to connect with other people who might feel as scared as I was when I was younger and people that don't have anyone else to talk to about it," said Kameran Ulferts, co-president of the College Diabetes Network. "I think creating friendships and bond where we can work through this together. Diabetes doesn't just impact us, it impacts our family, our friends and everything we do every day."

$6,700 was raised at Sunday's event.

Funds will go to the Lincoln chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
