Hall County builds on strengths of ag-related tourism events

Hall County is building on its strengths, with agriculture as a key part of the tourism strategy.

Whether it's the State Fair or Husker Harvest Days, Grand Island has carved out a unique niche.

When folks stay in local hotels, they pay taxes that attract more visitors.

This year, Hall County is awarding more than $350,000 in visitor improvement funds, administered by the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Assistant Director Tricia Beem said more than $100,000 will go to projects on the Fonner Park campus, including a warm up space for horse shows and an outdoor horse arena that was completed in 2016.

Beem said the other big tourism draw is the Heartland Public Shooting Park. She said they're expanding with an Olympic style trap shooting facility.

These tourism grants also help attract more livestock shows, like the junior national cattle shows that have brought thousands to Grand Island over the last few years.

They also awarded funds to Husker Harvest Days to help with site improvements.
