Athlete of the Week: Prestin Melroy
Every athlete wants to prove that they belong with the best. Holdrege wrestler Prestin Melroy did just that with his performance the last few weeks.
"You know he's just always loved the sport and has wanted to be apart of it since he was little so those kinds of things have helped him be successful now," said head coach Bruce Bricker.
It began at the John Higgins Invitational in Lexington where he faced the top wrestler in Class A Braiden Ruffin. Melroy upset the North Platte product notching a 4-3 win.
"I knew he was a big move kind of guy and I knew I had to keep it close to have a chance," said Melroy. "I knew on my feet I could wrestle with him on the mat. I got out there and just wrestled my match. "
The following week, Prestin wrestled against the top ranked wrestlers from Class C and D. Melroy came out on top moving his overall record to 34-0.
To cap off an already incredible run, Melroy took home the Central Conference crown following a 7-0 victory in the championship over York.
"It's a real confidence booster going in to the state tournament next week and districts this week but take it one match at a time," said Melroy. "Just having those in my back pocket knowing that I can wrestle with anyone in the state on any level."
