Athlete of the Week: St. Cecilia's Jack Thompson
Good things come to those who wait. St. Cecilia's Jack Thompson lived that motto last week after winning the Class C individual state championship in his first appearance as a senior.
"I've played this course quite a bit, so I knew where I could miss," said Thompson. "I guess I didn't really miss in too bad of spots and just managed the course really well."
Thompson navigated windy conditions and cold temperatures on day 1 at Meadowlark Hills like a pro, making 3 birdies on his way to a 75. Good for a 1 shot lead. His coach gave him advice before he hit the course for his final round.
"Keep it simple, fairways and greens," stated head coach Randy Ahrens. "Play the clubs that can keep it in play. You know don't get caught up in the moment, play your game and let everybody else chase you. That's something that I think Jack understands, but it was more important that he just played the way he did. We said that if someone comes out and shoots a career round, you can't control that."
Jack would birdie the first hole to put some distance between himself and the rest of the field. With one hole left, Thompson had a comfortable 4 shot lead. After tapping in on the 18th green, it was official. Jack was the state champion.
"Feels pretty good. The past two years I missed state by 1 stroke, so to finally make it my senior year and win the thing feels pretty darn good," the state champion said. "I'll definitely be thinking about this 20 years down the road and 30 years down the road. And it'll feel pretty good."
