Team of the Week: Ogallala girls golf
The Ogalalla girls golf team made history this week taking home the Class C state championship for the first time.
"I think it's absolutely fantastic for our program. It can't do anything but positive things for our program. These girls have worked hard for 3-4 years now, so it's great for them and fantastic for Ogalalla," said Kim Mestl, Ogallala girls golf coach.
The Indians held a comfortable lead after day one thanks to solid rounds from junior Kira Mestl and freshman Harley Hiltibrand.
"It was hard and the first day is always great; it didn't start off great and it was OK. We had a good lead at the beginning so that gave us some leeway," said Gabrielle Coviello, Ogallala senior.
Ogallala rose to the challenge on the final day, taking home the state championship trophy with an overall score of 730, 32 strokes clear of second place finisher Battle Creek.
"It was really emotional, like, seeing coach come in and pretty much telling us that we had won. It was really emotional," said Madison Herman, Ogallala senior.
"It was awesome. I heard from a lot of my friends today that the school was following us on NSAA, so it's awesome," said Haley Nolde, Ogallala senior.
It's safe to say the Indians made a memory to last a lifetime this week.
