Kissinger steps up in biggest game for Huskers

Nebraska freshman Taylor Kissinger (33) gets back on defense against Maryland, Feb. 4, 2018, after hitting a three (KHGI)

Nebraska freshman Taylor Kissinger is blossoming into a star for the Huskers.

Scoring a Big Red best 18 points against Maryland in a 64-57 loss on Sunday, Kissinger connected on 60 percent of her attempts. This came on a night when Nebraska shot 31% without her in the equation.

"She's very confident, and I can see why," said second-year head coach Amy Williams. "She's got a unique skill set and she can get her shot off very quickly and from deep and she practices it."

Kissinger is tied for the Nebraska lead with 2.33 three-point field goals per game made, good for 116th best in DI. She is also improving her rate of makes, hitting 50 percent versus the Terrapins, bringing her season numbers up to 37.8 percent on the year, second best for the Huskers and 102 in the nation.

The Minden, Neb. native's night brought her season average up to 10.7 points per game, tied with Maddie Simon and just ahead of Kate Cain (10.3) for second most on the roster. All of her production comes from an unparalleled work ethic with countless shots going up when there's no one else in the stands.

"That's the type of kid that she is. She's in the gym all the time, working on her shot. That's what develops confidence and so she has earned that," Williams said.

The hours in the gym is paying off in minutes, as well, as Kissinger has seen an increase in playing time in each of the last three games.

Nebraska (17-7, 8-3 B1G) wraps up a three-game home stand with Wisconsin visiting Pinnacle Bank Arena, Sunday at 2 p.m. The only way to watch it live is on the subscription-based BTN Plus.
