Deficit slightly too much for Loper women to overcome

UNK senior McKenzie Brown (10) collides with a Fort Hays State defender before making a basket, Feb. 20, 2018 (KHGI)

A Michaela Barry three-point shot was on target but came up a bit short as Fort Hays State knocked off Nebraska-Kearney 69-67 in a game the Lopers had no business being in during the final minute.

The Tigers took a 66-59 lead over UNK with 43 seconds remaining after a pair of Kacey Kennett free throws.

Alyssa Frauendorfer hit a three with 16 seconds remaining to make it a one-point game. Emma Stroyan hit both of her freebies and Brown was able to cash in on a lay up with 10 ticks left on the clock. A quick foul of Carly Heim set up the final scenario.

McKenzie Brown, who scored a team-leading 19 points, canned a short jumper and was fouled in the process, ultimately making the free-throw to make it 66-62 with 35 seconds left. After an immediate whistle, Lanie Page missed both of her free throws, keeping the deficit to four points.

UNK (20-6 Overall, 12-6 MIAA) is home to Southwest Baptist, Friday at 5:30 p.m.
